Astronauts only get third highest roller coaster system

In preparation for the new Orion rocket launching system, NASA contacted roller coaster engineers to design a new escape system in case of a dangerous launchpad malfunction. And by “malfunction”, I mean “explosion”, like the tragedy that befell the 3 Apollo 1 astronauts  in 1967.

The new escape system is basically a roller coaster. In the event of an emergency, astronauts or workers would scuttle over to the platform, which would drop 380 feet down and then roll them along rails directly into a bunker. The whole thing would take 4 minutes from top to bunker.

For the curious, the tallest roller coaster in the world is the Kingda Ka, at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, at 456 feet.
